Staniland Academy Council
Welcome to the School Council page!
What is the School Council?
The Staniland School Council is made up of children from Reception to Year 6. We have two children from each year group who are known as School Council Reps. School Council Reps wear a special blue badge so that other children can find them easily.
When do we meet? What happens in a meeting? What do Reps do?
The School Council meet every other week, during assembly or at lunchtime with Mrs Barton or Mrs Cook. They put together an agenda (list of things we need to discuss!) and our Chairperson will read the agenda through the meeting. Our Secretary will write down the minutes of the meeting (everything that we talk about!). These minutes are very important and they are photocopied for each member of the council to put in their special notebook. The reps must remember to bring their notebook to each meeting so they don’t forget their ideas.
At some point during the week, our School Council Reps are given time to feedback to their classes things that we discussed. They then have the opportunity to take down notes/ideas/comments from their peers to bring back to our next meeting.
Who are the Staniland Council Reps?

How do you become a School Council Rep?
Each Summer Term we advertise for new School Council Reps. Our Reps liked the idea of being on the School Council and decided to apply for the job! They fill out a form and answer some questions. We look at all the applicants and shortlist some. The children selected are given an interview. We announce the new School Council in the final assembly of the year.
What did the School Council do last year?
Tuck Shop
Last year the School Council wanted to start a healthy tuck shop. They spoke to their classes and children wanted to have fresh fruit as well as dried fruits. The only way to store fresh fruit would be to have a fridge. They raised money to buy a fridge by having a Toy Tombola, which was very successful. The Senior Leadership Team (which includes Mr Reed, Mrs Creasey Head of Academy and some of the teachers from our school) agreed that we could sell treats on a Friday. This year’s School Council will be responsible for helping to find out what to spend the money on for our school!
Pupil Conference
Every year we take part in the Annual Pupil Conference. It takes place at the Princess Royale Sports Arena in June. Last year we did a presentation on our Outdoor Learning Environment and spent time visiting Kirton Primary School to look at how they use theirs. It was a fantastic day and Staniland’s Journalistic Club came along too to report on other schools presentations.
Lunchtimes
The Senior Leadership Team (SLT) asked the School Council to find out from their classes how we could improve lunchtimes. These ideas were given to the SLT so that they could decide on the best way to make sure lunchtimes were a happy, relaxed and enjoyable time!
What have we done this year?
So far this year, the new School Council Reps have opened the Tuck Shop again and are beginning to understand how it is organised and run. This year’s School Council will be responsible for helping to find out from their peers and teachers how the profits from the tuck shop should be spent in school.
Thank you for visiting the School Council page! You can find out who we are and when we meet by looking on the School Council noticeboard near the main entrance. Please take some time to look at our Pupil Conference plaques too!
